Senior Backend Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails)
Full-time, Permanent 100%
Remote (US) — candidates based in California, New York, or Texas preferred $150,000 - $185,000 base salary + Benefits + Early Stage Equity

About the Client:
An early-stage fintech company structured as a public benefit corporation, building software for credit unions. The team is small, well-funded, and moving quickly as it scales toward its next stage of growth.

Project / Role Overview:
You'd be joining a team of four engineers working almost entirely on the backend. There are no product managers here, so engineers own their work across the full lifecycle, from framing the problem to shipping and maintaining it. This is a flat, high-ownership environment where you'll be trusted to make real product and architecture calls, not just implement someone else's spec.

Responsibilities
  • Own backend systems built in Ruby on Rails from design through production
  • Partner directly with the founding team on product direction, not just execution
  • Make architectural trade-off calls in a fast-moving, resource-constrained environment
  • Work closely with a small, fully distributed engineering team
Required Skills and Experience:
  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails backend development
  • Track record of owning products end-to-end rather than just executing tickets
  • Comfortable operating independently in ambiguous, fast-changing environments High ownership mentality and genuine interest in early-stage, mission-driven work
  • Experience in fintech or another highly regulated industry such as healthcare
Process (Four stages):
  1. An initial conversational interview with the hiring manager
  2. A product-focused discussion with a current engineer
  3. A hands-on Rails coding exercise that builds on that product discussion
  4. A final conversation with the founding team.
